Meaning & Inspiration

“Nawezaje Kunyamaza” by Dr Ipyana is a Swahili song of astonishment at what God has done. Its opening line, “Sijaona namna hii,” means “I have not seen anything like this,” and the question “Nawezaje kunyamaza?” asks how the singer could stay silent or still when God has acted. The question returns again and again, so the song feels like a refusal to keep quiet about a wonder.

The verses widen the scene. Nations tremble and the world is amazed at the great works of God, and the singer cries out to Jesus in wonder. The reaction of amazement is close to Mark 2:12, where the crowd says they had never seen anything like it, and the trembling of the nations recalls Psalm 99:1 and Psalm 66:3, which speak of God’s awesome deeds.

Because the lyric is built from repetition and spontaneous exclamations, it works as an act of testimony and praise rather than a narrative. The song’s message is that what God has done is too great for silence.
