About Joyous Celebration
Joyous Celebration is a South African gospel ensemble formed in 1994 by Mthunzi Namba, Jabu Hlongwane, and Lindelani Mkhize. The group was initially conceived as a project to celebrate South Africa's peaceful transition to democracy. Over time, it evolved into a prominent gospel music platform, known for its rotating membership. Performers are typically selected through auditions and sign one-year contracts, and the group has served as a training ground for new talent, with many former members later pursuing successful solo careers.
The ensemble is recognized for its annual live recordings and tours, which are frequently released as both CD and DVD projects. Their music incorporates a blend of English and various South African languages, featuring original compositions alongside traditional hymns. Among their many releases are the self-titled Joyous Celebration (1997), Joyous Celebration, Vol. 4: Connecting The Nation (2000), Joyous Celebration, Vol. 6: Be Inspired (2002), Joyous Celebration, Vol. 9 (2005), Joyous Celebration 21: Heal Our Land (2017), Joyous Celebration 22: All For You (2018), Joyous Celebration 25: Still We Rise (2021), and Joyous Celebration 26: Joy (2022).
The group has received 15 South African Music Awards (SAMA). Their ninth album, Joyous Celebration, Vol. 9, was certified 2× platinum in South Africa. They have also been honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Crown Gospel Awards. In 2021, Joyous Celebration signed a recording deal with Universal Music and Motown Gospel.
