as it is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet: “A voice of one calling in the wilderness, ‘Prepare the way for the Lord, make straight paths for Him.

Kila bonde litajazwa, Na kila mlima na kilima kitashushwa; Palipopotoka patakuwa pamenyoka, Na palipoparuza patalainishwa;
Every valley shall be filled in, and every mountain and hill made low. The crooked ways shall be made straight, and the rough ways smooth.

Na wote wenye mwili watauona wokovu wa Mungu.
And all humanity will see God’s salvation.’”

Basi, aliwaambia makutano ya wale waliomwendea ili awabatize, Enyi wazao wa nyoka, ni nani aliyewaonya ninyi kuikimbia hasira itakayokuja?
Then John said to the crowds coming out to be baptized by him, “You brood of vipers, who warned you to flee from the coming wrath?

Basi, toeni matunda yapatanayo na toba; wala msianze kusema mioyoni mwenu, Tunaye baba, ndiye Ibrahimu; kwa maana nawaambia ya kwamba katika mawe haya Mungu aweza kumwinulia Ibrahimu watoto.
Produce fruit, then, in keeping with repentance. And do not begin to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father.’ For I tell you that out of these stones God can raise up children for Abraham.

Na sasa hivi shoka limekwisha kuwekwa penye mashina ya miti; basi kila mti usiozaa matunda mazuri hukatwa na kutupwa motoni.
The axe lies ready at the root of the trees, and every tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire.”

Makutano wakamwuliza, Tufanye nini basi?
The crowds asked him, “What then should we do?”

Akawajibu akiwaambia, Mwenye kanzu mbili na ampe asiye na kanzu; na mwenye vyakula na afanye vivyo hivyo.
John replied, “Whoever has two tunics should share with him who has none, and whoever has food should do the same.”

Watoza ushuru nao wakaja kubatizwa, wakamwuliza, Mwalimu, tufanye nini sisi?
Even tax collectors came to be baptized. “Teacher,” they asked, “what should we do?”

Akawaambia, Msitoze kitu zaidi kuliko mlivyoamriwa.
“Collect no more than you are authorized,” he answered.
14
Askari nao wakamwuliza, wakisema, Sisi nasi tufanye nini? Akawaambia, Msidhulumu mtu, wala msishitaki kwa uongo; tena mtoshewe na mshahara wenu.
Then some soldiers asked him, “And what should we do?” “Do not take money by force or false accusation,” he said. “Be content with your wages.”

Basi, watu walipokuwa wakingoja yatakayotokea, wote wakiwaza-waza mioyoni mwao habari za Yohana, kama labda yeye ndiye Kristo,
The people were waiting expectantly and were all wondering in their hearts if John could be the Christ.

Yohana alijibu akawaambia wote, Kweli mimi nawabatiza kwa maji; lakini yuaja mtu mwenye nguvu kuliko mimi, ambaye mimi sistahili kuilegeza gidamu ya viatu vyake; yeye atawabatiza kwa Roho Mtakatifu na kwa moto;
John answered all of them: “I baptize you with water, but One more powerful than I will come, the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire.

ambaye pepeo lake li mkononi mwake, naye atausafisha sana uwanda wake, na kuikusanya ngano ghalani mwake, bali makapi atayateketeza kwa moto usiozimika.
His winnowing fork is in His hand to clear His threshing floor and to gather the wheat into His barn; but He will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.”

Basi, kwa maonyo mengine mengi aliwahubiri watu.
With these and many other exhortations, John proclaimed the good news to the people.

Lakini mfalme Herode alipokaripiwa na yeye kwa ajili ya Herodia, mke wa nduguye, na maovu yote aliyoyafanya Herode,
But when he rebuked Herod the tetrarch regarding his brother’s wife Herodias and all the evils he had done,

aliongeza na hili juu ya yote, alimfunga Yohana gerezani.
Herod added this to them all: He locked John up in prison.

Ikawa, watu wote walipokwisha kubatizwa, na Yesu naye amebatizwa, naye anaomba, mbingu zilifunuka;
When all the people were being baptized, Jesus was baptized too. And as He was praying, heaven was opened,

Roho Mtakatifu akashuka juu yake kwa mfano wa kiwiliwili, kama hua; sauti ikatoka mbinguni, Wewe ndiwe Mwanangu, mpendwa wangu; nimependezwa nawe.
and the Holy Spirit descended on Him in a bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven: “You are My beloved Son; in You I am well pleased.”
