Meaning & Inspiration
“Itabaza” by Vestine & Dorcas is a Kinyarwanda gospel song, and the title is the call that opens it. The first verse speaks of God as a shelter for people, a protector who keeps watch over life and breath, and the singer admits not knowing everything about how He works. The chorus says that God only adds strength and desire to His people.
It also says that He has kept the promise made to the singer’s mother, and that His name is the answer for every need. The bridge says that now is the time, and calls on God to rescue and bring joy. The song ends with a short Amen.
The themes of strength, promise and deliverance are close to Isaiah 40:29, Psalm 46:1 and Philippians 2:13, on God giving power to the weary, being a refuge and working in His people to will and to act. The wording is simple and repeated, and it suits a choir leading a congregation in prayer.
