About Kirk Franklin
Kirk Franklin is a gospel music artist, songwriter, and producer. He was born Kirk Dewayne Franklin on January 26, 1970, in Fort Worth, Texas, and was raised by his great-aunt, Gertrude. He began playing piano at age four and became the music director of the Mt. Rose Baptist Church adult choir at age eleven.
His debut album, Kirk Franklin & The Family, was released in 1993 and became the first gospel album in history to be certified Platinum. He followed with albums including Whatcha Lookin' 4 (1996), God's Property (1997), The Rebirth of Kirk Franklin (2002), Hero (2005), Hello Fear (2011), Losing My Religion (2015), and Father's Day (2023). In 2004, he founded the record label Fo Yo Soul Entertainment. He has also served as host and executive producer for the gospel talent competition show Sunday Best on BET, and is a bestselling author, including the book The Blueprint: A Plan for Living Above Life's Storms.
Franklin has received twenty Grammy Awards and twenty-two GMA Dove Awards. He holds the record for the most number-one singles on the Billboard Hot Gospel Songs chart. In 2021, he was an inaugural inductee into the Black Music & Entertainment Walk of Fame, and in 2026 he received the Black Music Icon award from the Recording Academy's Black Collective.
