Meaning & Inspiration

“The Lamb of God” by Kirk Franklin is a gospel song of gratitude to Christ as the sacrificial Lamb. The opening line calls the listener to “behold the Lamb, the precious Lamb of God,” who was “born into sin that I may live again.” That echoes John 1:29, where John the Baptist points to Jesus as the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.

The verses are personal. The singer wonders why God loves him so, admits going left when told to go right, and stands in the midst of his tears to claim Jesus as the Lamb. Another section confesses that sin drew him apart from God, then speaks of new life when sins are washed away and quotes the idea that whom the Son sets free is free indeed, close to John 8:36.

The ending repeats the chorus with simple vocal ad-libs, keeping the focus on thanks for the Lamb.
