Meaning & Inspiration
“Asante” by Evelyn Wanjiru is a Swahili song of thanks whose title means “Thank you.” The opening lines repeat “Asante Yesu,” thanking Jesus for His goodness, “kwa wema wako,” and asking Him to “receive praise,” “pokea sifa.” A second round adds “Ninakupenda,” “I love You,” so the thanks becomes a declaration of love.
The verse turns to testimony: “Tazama yale Mungu ametenda,” or “look at what God has done,” and it says He has fulfilled His promise in the singer’s life. The singer then declares that God is faithful, answers, and is able. The bridge repeats “Mwaminifu,” faithful, and says that what is asked will be given and what is sought will be found, and that God’s ear is not heavy to hear.
That wording is close to Matthew 7:7 and Isaiah 59:1, and the theme of thanks for God’s goodness is close to Psalm 107:1. It is a simple song of gratitude and trust.
