Meaning & Inspiration
“We ni Mungu” by Essence of Worship is a Swahili worship song whose title means “You are God.” The opening line, “Yesu twakuabudu, Baba tunakupa sifa,” says “Jesus, we worship You, Father, we give You praise,” and the next line adds that the singers are present, worshipping and praising. Each of these lines is echoed in a bracketed response.
The central refrain repeats “We ni Mungu” (You are God) and gives two reasons for praise: “unastahili” (You are worthy) and “pokea sifa” (receive the praise). The short bridge widens the focus, with “Milele yote wastahili” (forever You are worthy) and “Milele yote unatosha” (forever You are enough). This is close to the heavenly worship of Revelation 4:11 and to Psalm 100:3, which calls the congregation to know that the Lord is God.
The ending is a three-part call, with the women, the men, and then everyone singing “Haleluya.” The song is simple and repetitive on purpose, so that the whole assembly can join in worship centered on God’s worth and sufficiency.
