Meaning & Inspiration
“Shangilia” by Essence of Worship is a Swahili praise song, and the title means “rejoice.” It opens with the statement that He is worthy of the praise of our hearts, followed by hallelujah and a call for ululation. The chorus tells the listener to rejoice, shout to the Lord, and praise the Lord of lords.
The refrain, “Ametukuka, milele ametukuka,” means “He is exalted, He is exalted forever,” and it is repeated many times. A short verse asks about His eternal name and the remembrance of Him from generation to generation, and then calls all nations to praise Him. The bridge cites “Zaburi ya mia hamsini,” Psalm 150, and lists trumpets, harps, lyres, tambourines and dancing.
The song is close to Psalm 150:3-6 in its instruments, and the call to all nations is close to Psalm 117:1. The line that everything with breath should praise the Lord echoes Psalm 150:6. It is built to be sung loudly.
