Lyrics

Twendeni askari, watu wa Mungu;
Yesu yuko mbele, tumwandame juu.
Ametangulia Bwana vitani, twende mbele kwani ndiye amini.

Twende askari watu wa Mungu;
Yesu yuko Mbele, tumwandame juu.

Jeshi la Shetani, likisikia jina la Mwokozi,
litakimbia, kelele za shangwe zivume nchi; n
dugu inueni zenu sauti.

Twende askari watu wa Mungu;
Yesu yuko Mbele, tumwandame juu.

Kweli kundi dogo, watu wa Mungu sisi na mababa tu moja fungu.
Hatutengwi nao, moja imani, Tumaini moja, na moja dini.

Twende askari watu wa Mungu;
Yesu yuko Mbele, tumwandame juu.

Haya mbele watu nasi njiani, inueni myoyo, nanyi sifuni;
heshima na sifa ni ya Mfalme, juu hata chini, sana zivume. .

Meaning & Inspiration

“Twendeni Askari” is the Swahili form of the classic hymn “Onward, Christian Soldiers.” Its marching language presents Christian discipleship as a shared advance under Christ’s leadership. Jesus goes before the company, while praise and the name of the Savior answer the opposition attributed to Satan. The military image is spiritual rather than a call to human violence: courage, faith, hope, and worship are the forces emphasized throughout the verses.

The hymn also stresses unity across generations. The present company belongs with earlier believers through one faith and one hope, an idea closely aligned with the New Testament description of the church’s shared confession. Its recurring chorus gathers that unity around following Jesus. The final verse turns the march into public praise, calling for honor to the King to sound everywhere. As a Swahili hymn, it combines memorable repetition with a steady summons to perseverance, fellowship, and confidence in Christ’s direction.
