Meaning & Inspiration

“Mtetezi Wangu” by Christina Shusho is a Swahili worship song whose refrain, “Mtetezi wangu yu hai,” means “My defender lives.” The verses are built as a list of names for Jesus matched to the places where a person might need Him. To the animals He is the Lion of Judah, among trees the tree of life, among waters the living water, to the hungry the bread of life, and among rocks the firm rock. To rulers He is King of kings.

The second verse turns to human need: Jesus as healer for the sick, comforter for the grieving, help for those under pressure, husband of widows, father of the fatherless, and wonderful counselor in business. Later verses speak directly to a woman troubled over her marriage, a man who lost his job, a young person who was rejected, and servants of God who are mocked, each assured that the defender lives.

These titles echo Revelation 5:5, John 6:35, Psalm 68:5, and Isaiah 9:6. The song’s message is that no situation falls outside the care of the living Christ.
