Lyrics

Blessed art Thou son of David Blessed art Thou root of Jesse Blessed art Thou son of David Blessed art thou root of Jesse You are eminently glorious immaculately beautiful I can go on and on, on and on But my words are not enough My vocabularies will fail Me But permit me to cry out

Blessed art Thou rock of ages Blessed art Thou King of Heaven Blessed art Thou rock of ages Blessed art Thou King of Heaven You are infinitely powerful Magnificently wonderful I can go on and on And on and on and on and on But my words are not enough My vocabularies they (always) fail me Permit me to bring this song of victory

Meaning & Inspiration

I haven't been able to stop thinking about that part where he says his vocabulary fails him. It’s such a strange thing to admit when you’re a musician, right? You spend your whole life trying to find the perfect melody or the right word to describe how big God is, and then you just hit a wall. It’s like when I try to pray and I just run out of things to say, so I stop trying to be eloquent and just start repeating the same word over and over again. That’s what this song feels like. It’s like he started with all these big titles for God—King of Heaven, Rock of Ages—and realized they were just labels, and labels don't really touch the reality of who he’s talking to.

The way they keep singing "Iba" over and over—it stops being a song at some point and turns into something else. It feels like surrender, honestly. I keep thinking about how he mentions the wind and the rain and how God controls them, like the stuff that’s way beyond us. It makes me feel small, but in a way that’s actually kind of a relief. Like, if God is in charge of how hard the wind blows, I don’t have to worry so much about the things I can’t control. It’s humbling, but not in a way that makes you feel crushed. It’s more like being invited to stand in the middle of a storm and realizing the storm has an owner. I don't know, maybe I'm overthinking it, but it just sticks. Just sitting there repeating a word of honor because everything else feels too small to carry the weight of it. It’s like when the talking stops and you just have to look up. And even then, what do you say?
