Meaning & Inspiration
TOBECHUKWU takes its title from the Igbo phrase meaning roughly "thanks be to God," repeated as the song's chorus after nearly every verse. Rather than describing one event, the lyric lists several: fear taken away, peace given, pain removed, joy given in its place, each one credited back to the same short phrase.
The first verse names God directly as "Jehovah Nissi," the title given in Exodus 17:15 after Israel's victory over Amalek, where Moses builds an altar and calls it "the Lord is my banner." Using that name here reframes the song's list of personal answers to prayer as evidence of the same character named in that verse, a God who acts on behalf of his people and is remembered for it.
The recurring instruction to "come and join, worship Him" turns the song from a private testimony into an invitation, close to Psalm 34:3, where the psalmist invites others to exalt the Lord's name together.
