Meaning & Inspiration
“Nara” by Travis Greene and Tim Godfrey is a song of thanksgiving that opens with the question, “What shall I render to Jehovah for He’s done so much for me?” The singer says he cannot tell it all, and that even ten thousand tongues would not be enough. The refrain, “Nara ekele mo,” is Igbo for “Take my thanksgiving.”
The verses name what God has done: He heals sickness completely, He knows the heart, and He is called living water. Each line is answered by the same offer of thanks, so the song builds by repetition. It ends where it began, returning to the question of what to give back.
The opening question is close to Psalm 116:12, and the wish for ten thousand tongues recalls the hymn tradition of Charles Wesley. Healing and living water bring to mind Psalm 103:3 and John 4:10. The song is simple, warm and made for a congregation to sing in more than one language.
