Meaning & Inspiration
“Nguvu Yetu” by Neema Gospel Choir is a Swahili prayer built on the line “Bwana neno lako ni faraja kwetu na nguvu yetu,” which means that the Lord’s word is comfort and strength for His people. The opening is repeated several times, which gives the song a congregational feel.
The verse asks God to touch the church, to comfort His children, and to bless His servants in the field where they do His work. The later section asks the Father for strength and comfort again, because His word is their strength. This is close to Psalm 119:50, where God’s word is comfort in affliction.
The bridge says that without His presence Jesus they have no power, but in Him they find strength. That echoes John 15:5. The song ends with a hopeful line, “Tutatawala tena,” meaning they shall reign again with the Lord. An English translation follows the Swahili text.
