Meaning & Inspiration
Most days, I’m just trying to scrub the smell of the pig pen off my skin. It clings. You walk back into the house, and your hands are still shaking, and you don’t quite trust the floor under your feet yet. People talk about being found like it’s a neat ending to a book, but for me, it feels more like being dragged out of a fire by the hair. You’re alive, but you’re scorched.
Nathaniel Bassey’s The River isn’t polite. It doesn’t ask for permission to move.
There’s this line he repeats—“We do what the father says.”
When I was out there, spending the inheritance on things I don't even like to remember, I did exactly what I wanted. That was the point of leaving, right? To be my own god, to follow my own gut, to chase whatever hunger felt loudest in the moment. And look where it got me: eating scraps. So, hearing someone sing about doing what the Father says? It hits me in the gut. It’s not about rules; it’s about safety. It’s the realization that my autonomy was actually a prison. If the Father says "go," it means the path ahead isn’t rigged with landmines. It means I don’t have to guess where the edge of the cliff is.
Ezekiel 47 talks about water flowing from the temple, and man, that’s the imagery that breaks me. It starts as a trickle, then it’s ankles, then knees, then over your head. You can’t stand against it. You can’t negotiate with it. You just have to let it take you.
“We go where the river goes.”
I spent so much time digging my heels into the mud, trying to build a life on ground that kept shifting. I’m still learning how to float. It’s terrifying. I’m wired to try to swim, to try to control the current, to try to make sure I don’t drift into anything I can’t manage. But the Father isn’t asking for management; He’s asking for surrender.
Honestly? I don't always feel like "soaring on eagle's wings" like the song says. Sometimes, I’m just trying to keep my head above water. But maybe that’s the point. Maybe the river doesn’t care if I’m soaring or if I’m barely clinging to a piece of driftwood. It just moves. And as long as I’m in it, I’m home.
I’m still waiting for the smoke to fully clear, and I’m still figuring out what it looks like to live "like the Bible says" when I’ve spent so long living like the world demands. It’s not clean. It’s not easy. But for the first time in a long time, I’m not the one steering the ship, and that—that scandalous, terrifying loss of control—is the only thing keeping me upright.
