About MercyMe
MercyMe is an American contemporary Christian music band formed in 1994 in Edmond, Oklahoma. The group’s current members include lead vocalist Bart Millard, percussionist Robby Shaffer, bassist Nathan Cochran, and guitarists Michael Scheuchzer and Barry Graul. The band’s name came from a phrase used by Millard’s grandmother during his time as a youth ministry intern.
Before signing with INO Records in 2001, MercyMe released six independent albums. Their major-label debut, Almost There, arrived in 2001 and achieved triple-platinum certification. The album included the crossover hit “I Can Only Imagine,” which became the first digital single in Christian music history to be certified platinum and later double-platinum. Another early single, “Word of God Speak,” was named the No. 1 Song of the Decade (2000–2009) by Billboard in both the Christian Songs and Christian AC Songs categories.
MercyMe’s catalog also includes the albums Spoken For, Undone, Welcome to the New (2014), Lifer (2017), Inhale (Exhale) (2021), and Always Only Jesus (2022). Additional songs associated with the band are “Even If,” “Say I Won’t,” and “Then Christ Came.” Their twelfth studio album, Wonder & Awe, was released in 2025.
The band’s work has earned eight GMA Dove Awards and two American Music Awards for Favorite Contemporary Inspirational Artist (2004, 2010). In 2009, Billboard named MercyMe the No. 1 Artist of the Decade in both the Christian Songs and Christian AC Songs categories.
