Hillsong is a global contemporary Christian church and music collective known for producing worship music. The collective's roots trace back to Hillsong Church in Sydney, Australia, where Hillsong Worship (originally called Hillsong Live) was formed in 1983. This praise and worship collective has been central to the church's music ministry, with notable members including Darlene Zschech, Marty Sampson, Brooke Fraser, Reuben Morgan, and Joel Houston.
Two other music collectives emerged from the church's youth ministry. Hillsong United formed in 1998 and became a contemporary worship collective, while Hillsong Young & Free was established as a youth worship team. The music produced by these groups spans contemporary worship, contemporary Christian music, and Christian rock. Their songs are used in churches globally, with estimates suggesting millions of people sing them weekly.
Key releases include Hillsong Worship's Spirit and Truth (1988) and Shout to the Lord (1996), along with Hillsong United's Zion (2013) and Empires (2015). Hillsong Young & Free released Youth Revival in 2016. Two of the most recognized recordings are "What a Beautiful Name" by Hillsong Worship and "Oceans (Where Feet May Fail)" by Hillsong United. Both songs achieved RIAA Platinum certification in the United States.
The collectives have received notable industry recognition. Hillsong Worship won the Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Christian Music Performance/Song for "What a Beautiful Name" in 2018. Hillsong United was named Top Christian Artist at the Billboard Music Awards in both 2015 and 2016, and "Oceans (Where Feet May Fail)" won Top Christian Song at the 2016 Billboard Music Awards.
