Meaning & Inspiration
I’ve been sitting here with this song from Mercy Chinwo’s Elevated EP, just letting the words sink in. It’s strange how something can feel so comforting, yet leave me wondering if I’m taking the promise for granted. She keeps coming back to being "hid" in Him, which hits that nerve in Colossians where it says our life is hidden with Christ in God. It’s a wild thought when you actually stop to stare at it—that my identity, my safety, my whole existence isn't in my own hands anymore. It’s tucked away somewhere I can’t touch.
The line about living, moving, and having our being in Him pulls directly from Acts 17. Paul was talking to people who didn't know the first thing about the creator, telling them he’s not some far-off statue. He’s the very breath in their lungs. When the song says it, it feels personal. But then I get stuck on the part about never being "disadvantaged." That’s where I start wrestling. Does that mean nothing goes wrong? Does that mean no pain, no loss? I look at the disciples, and they were definitely disadvantaged by the world’s standards—martyred, broken, scattered. So when I sing about being safe in the hollow of His hands, am I saying I’m safe from harm, or am I saying I’m safe in the middle of it?
It’s easy to think of God’s hands like a safe house where the rain can’t touch us. But the birds she mentions, the ones the song says He takes care of—they still have to face the storms. They still have to hunt for food. Maybe being "hid" in Him doesn't mean life gets easy. Maybe it just means that when everything else falls apart, there’s this layer of existence—this deeper reality—that stays untouched. I don’t know. I guess I want to believe the "never disadvantaged" part is true in a way that goes deeper than whether or not I’m comfortable, but it’s hard not to use the song to just hope for an easy life. If He’s really holding me, is that enough, even when the world says I’ve lost everything?
