Meaning & Inspiration
“Consuming Fire – I Worship You Today” by Jimmy D Psalmist calls God the all consuming fire and asks Him to manifest Himself. The refrain, “Come and manifest yourself,” returns after every section. The verses say that God has fire in His eyes, that nothing hides from Him, and that He sees even the deepest secrets of men, and they ask Him to expose evil and consume wickedness.
The bridge changes from asking about the world to a personal request: “I bow before your throne.” The next section turns the image inward, asking God to set the heart on fire, make the singer a shining light, and speak through the voice and see through the eyes. The ending repeats that the consuming fire has blazing eyes and finishes with the request five times.
The imagery is close to Hebrews 12:29, Deuteronomy 4:24 and Revelation 1:14, where fire is linked with God and with the eyes of Christ. Psalm 139:1-4 also speaks of God knowing all secrets. The song is a long, expectant prayer.
