Meaning & Inspiration
I keep getting stuck on that one line, "Jesus you are bigger than what we call you." It’s strange how much we try to box God in with our own vocabulary. We label Him with our limited experiences or our specific needs, like when the lyrics get blunt about things like cancer, and I’m sitting here thinking about the tiny, suffocating categories I put Him into every single day. I talk like I know exactly who He is, but if He’s really the One the demons tremble before, my definitions are probably just insulting. It’s wild to sing about Him being "bigger than what people say" because half the time, what people say is just a reflection of their own fear or their own small version of reality.
I’ve spent so much time worrying about the weight of human opinion, that constant background noise about who I should be or what God ought to look like in my life, and then I hear these words about Him being the "Defender" and "Protector" and it feels like the room finally gets some air. It’s hard to trust that He is actually bigger than the things that scare me the most. Sometimes I want to believe He’s just a shield I can hide behind, but the lyrics force me to look at the magnitude of the name itself. If every knee has to bow, then my own pride has to get out of the way first. It’s not just that He’s bigger than the bullies or the critics; He’s bigger than the very concepts I use to try and contain Him.
It makes me wonder if I’m actually looking for a God who is big enough to break me, or if I’m just looking for a louder version of my own voice to validate me. When they sing about Him being higher than the highest, it’s not meant to be comforting in a soft way—it’s kind of terrifying. It means He’s unreachable by my standards. I’m left staring at that thought, realizing that if He’s truly as big as they’re saying, I have absolutely no control over what happens next, and I’m not sure I like that as much as I claim I do.
