Lyrics

(chorus)

Jesus, how can you love

Someone like me

Lover, I’m grateful for your love

Jesus, how can you love

Someone like me

Lover, thank you for your love

(verse 1)

You are my pillar of fire in the night

You shine your light

In my darkest moment

You are my cloud of glory in the day

Lord you lead me

You never let me stray (x2)

(chorus)

Jesus, how can you love

Someone like me

Lover, I’m grateful for your love

Jesus, how can you love

Someone like me

Lover, thank you for your love (x2)

You’re my lover and you love me

Yes I love you, lord

(verse 2)

How much did I pay

You gave your life for me

What did I do that you love me so

You spread your wings

And covered me with your love

Oh my lover,

Thank you for your love (x2)

(chorus)

Jesus, how can you love

Someone like me

Lover, I’m grateful for your love

Jesus, how can you love

Someone like me

Lover, thank you for your love

Jesus, how can you love

Someone like me

Lover, I’m grateful for your love

(your love is amazing

And I wanna tell it)

Jesus, how can you love

(how you gave your life

For a man like me)

Someone like me

Lover, thank you for your love

(bridge)

I love the way you love me

(I love the way you love me)

You gave your life just for me

(ilove the way you love me)

I love the way you love me

(I love the way you love me)

Your love is so amazing

(I love the way you love me)

You woke me in the morning

Put food on my table

(I love the way you love me)

I love (I love) (repeat)

I love the way you love me

(ilove the way you love me)

You pick me up and set me on high

(I love the way you love me)

I-love the way you care for me

(I love the way you love me)

You love is reckless, is overwhelming

(I love the way you love me)

I love (I love) (repeat)

I love you

Meaning & Inspiration

Jimmy D Psalmist and Prospa Ochimana are singing about love—that grand, sweeping, "reckless" kind of love that dominates the charts. It’s an easy vibe. But then I hit the line, "What did I do that you love me so," and my brain goes to that place no one wants to admit exists.

We treat "love" like it’s this warm blanket, but when you’re standing in a kitchen at 3:00 AM after a layoff, or watching a casket being lowered, that question feels heavy. If you’re honest, you don’t feel loveable in those moments. You feel like a failure, or a grieving wreck. And yet, here is the song, insisting that this affection is somehow tied to me, "a man like me."

There’s a danger in the "Cheap Grace" variety of worship music that makes God’s love sound like a transaction—I do something, he does something, we’re good. But the lyrics admit, "How much did I pay / You gave your life for me." That’s the pivot point. It acknowledges that the cost wasn't mine to cover. It’s a classic Pauline sentiment, echoing Romans 5:8—while we were still sinners, Christ died. It’s not about my performance; it’s about his persistence.

But I’m still staring at the ceiling, wondering if this "pillar of fire" is just a metaphor for a lightbulb that flickers too much. When the track talks about "waking me in the morning" and "putting food on my table," it feels dangerously close to prosperity-speak. Does the love disappear if the table is empty? Does the fire go out when the diagnosis comes back bad?

The song calls this love "overwhelming." That’s the only part I can actually stand behind. If it’s truly overwhelming, it shouldn't just feel good in a studio. It should be able to sit with me in the room where the silence is deafening. If God is a "lover," as the lyrics repeat, then he’s got to be someone who sticks around when the song ends and the quiet, ugly reality of being human sets back in.

I don't know if I fully buy the "reckless" descriptor—reckless implies a lack of control, and I’m not sure I want a God who isn't in control—but I’ll take the mystery of it. I’ll take the idea that someone is looking at the mess of my life and deciding it’s worth sticking around for, even when I’m not bringing anything to the table. I’m not convinced that "I love the way you love me" is the whole story, but maybe, just maybe, it’s a place to start when you’ve got nothing else left to say.
