Meaning & Inspiration

“Ingabo” by Gloria Muliro is a Kenyan gospel song sung largely in Luhya, with a solo voice and a group answering. The word “Ingabo” is the group’s response throughout, and the lines mention Jesus by name and also seem to speak of the cross (musalaba), though the exact meaning of the words is not translated here.

The song moves in call and response. The leader sings a line about Jesus, the group replies “Neingabo,” and a separate pair of lines repeats as an appeal about entering heaven. The second verse seems to list things life cannot be measured by, naming learning, money, and strength, and then points to the cross of Jesus. That idea would be close to 1 Corinthians 1:18, where the cross is called the power of God.

If the title is read as a shield, the song also recalls Psalm 18:2, which calls God a shield and a rock. The ending is a hallelujah sung toward heaven. The song is joyful and communal, built for singing together.
