Lyrics

Verse 1

Hmnn… Get this dross out
Oh, burning fire
Yeah, inside my heart and mind
I need them all to burn
Carried for too long
I surrender to your furnace
Purify my heart oh fire
Oh fire, burn, burn
Fire burn
Oh fire, burn
Fire burn

Chorus

Ga-a mu (here we are)
Mun taru, A gare ka (gathered before you)
Da hanu A sama (with hands lifted high)
Ka sauko Da ruhun ka (bring down your Spirit)
Kamar wuta (like fire)
Ga-a mu (here we are)
Mun taru, A gare ka (gathered before you)
Da hanu A sama (with hands lifted high)
Ka sauko Da ruhun ka (bring down your Spirit)
Kamar wuta (like fire)

Meaning & Inspiration

Fire is a prayer for the Spirit to purify the heart like fire. The English lines ask to get the dross out, to let burning fire reach the heart and mind, to burn what has been carried too long, and to surrender to the furnace so the heart is purified. The Hausa lines, with English glosses, say that the worshipers are here, gathered before God with hands lifted high, asking Him to send His Spirit like fire.

The imagery of refining comes from Malachi 3:2-3 and Isaiah 1:25 on removing dross, Zechariah 13:9 on refining silver, Acts 2:3-4 on the Spirit like fire, and Psalm 51:10 on a clean heart. The bilingual refrain and repeated plea to purify make it a simple prayer that invites people of different languages to join, and its tone is humble, surrendered and expectant.
