Meaning & Inspiration

Hallelujah Chorus is a gospel arrangement of the famous Hallelujah text about the reign of Christ. The opening repeats Hallelujah and then the words "For the Lord God omnipotent reigneth," followed by "The kingdom of this world is become the kingdom of our Lord and of his Christ," and "he shall reign for ever and ever." The later sections call Him King of Kings and Lord of Lords in turn, with the response of for ever and ever hallelujah.

The text comes straight from Revelation 19:6, Revelation 11:15 and Revelation 19:16. The arrangement divides the lines among voices and repeats them, which builds energy toward the final declaration, and the plain wording makes the song a good fit for a choir or congregation. Its focus stays on praise for the sovereign reign of Christ. The call-and-response lines give a gospel choir room to build each phrase.
