About John P. Kee
John Prince Kee was born on June 4, 1962, in Durham, North Carolina, and attended the North Carolina School of the Arts and the Yuba College Conservatory School of Music. Known throughout his career as “The Prince of Gospel Music,” he established himself as a distinctive voice in gospel by blending traditional gospel with contemporary gospel, R&B, and jazz elements.
In the mid-1980s, Kee founded the New Life Community Choir (NLCC), and in 1990 he founded the Victory in Praise (V.I.P.) Music and Arts Seminar Mass Choir. Since 1995, he has served as the pastor of the New Life Fellowship Center in Charlotte, North Carolina, maintaining a dual calling as both a recording artist and a church leader. His early album Yes Lord (1987) was followed by a string of releases including Just Me This Time (1990), Colorblind (1994), Show Up! (1995), Strength (1999), The Color of Music (2004), The Legacy Project (2011), and Level Next (2015).
Kee’s contributions have earned him multiple industry honors. He has won 27 Stellar Awards and 37 Gospel Music Workshop of America (GMWA) Excellence Awards. He was the recipient of a Trailblazer Award from former President Bill Clinton, received the James Cleveland Lifetime Achievement Award, and was honored with the 2025 BMI Trailblazer of Gospel Music Award. In 2007, he was inducted into the Christian Music Hall of Fame.
