Meaning & Inspiration
John P. Kee's “Lily in the Valley” is built as a compact choir testimony. Each stanza keeps the same musical frame while changing what is found in the valley: first the lily, then joy, love, and peace. That repetition makes the valley more than a place of difficulty. It becomes the place where the singers recognize God's presence and gifts.
The image joins two biblical phrases heard often in Christian worship. Song of Songs names a lily of the valleys, while Revelation calls Jesus the bright Morning Star. The recording brings those images together without pausing for explanation; the choir answers through repetition and a recurring “Amen.” As joy, love, and peace replace the opening image, the words also recall the fruit of the Spirit in Galatians. The performance therefore moves from a picture of Christ toward the change worshippers say they have found while passing through the valley.
