About Charles Wesley

Charles Wesley (1707–1788) was an English Anglican cleric, a leader of the Methodist movement, and one of the most prolific hymn writers in Christian history. Born in Epworth, Lincolnshire, to Samuel and Susanna Wesley, he attended Westminster School and Christ Church, Oxford. In 1729, he helped organize the “Holy Club” at Oxford University, a group that emphasized disciplined Christian living and would become a foundation for early Methodism. He was ordained as a deacon and priest in the Church of England in 1735.

Following an evangelical conversion in 1738, Wesley began writing hymns to express his faith and theology. Over his lifetime, he is credited with writing more than 6,000 hymns. His catalog includes enduring works such as “Hark! The Herald Angels Sing,” “And Can It Be,” “O for a Thousand Tongues to Sing,” “Christ the Lord Is Risen Today,” “Love Divine, All Loves Excelling,” “Lo! He Comes With Clouds Descending,” “Jesus, Lover of My Soul,” and “Christ, Whose Glory Fills the Skies.” These hymns remain central to Christian worship across many denominations.

In recognition of his lasting contribution to Christian music, the Gospel Music Association inducted Charles Wesley into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame in 1995. His hymnody continues to shape the worship life of churches around the world.
