I’m standing in the back, arms crossed, watching the lights pulse and the choir sway. Zoravo and Takie Ndou are singing “Mungu wa yasiyo wezekana”—God of the impossible. It’s loud, it’s rhythmic, and it’s undeniably catchy. But when the music stops, when the crowd clears out and you’re left in a quiet, dark house with a stack of medical bills or a redundancy notice on your desk, does “God of the impossible” feel like a foundation, or just a chant meant to drown out the noise of reality?
The lyrics lean heavily on the phrase “Hakuna la kukushinda”—nothing is too difficult for You. It sounds like a sturdy, iron-clad promise. It echoes Genesis 18:14, where the Lord asks, “Is anything too hard for the Lord?” It’s a classic, heavy-hitter verse. But for the person who has prayed for the healing that didn’t come, or for the marriage that dissolved despite the desperate, nightly pleas, that phrase can feel like a jagged pill.
There is a fine line between a declaration of faith and a form of cheap grace that refuses to acknowledge the wreckage. If we repeat “nothing is too hard for God” while someone is actively drowning, are we inviting them into a hope that is grounded in the character of a complex God, or are we just telling them to smile harder?
The song treats the impossibility of God as an invitation to celebration—and that’s a perspective. But I wonder: what happens to the theology of this song when God does allow the impossible to remain impossible? When the "hard thing" wins?
Scripture isn’t always neat. Look at Gethsemane. Jesus, in his humanity, prayed for a different outcome—he asked for the cup to pass. If we only define God by what He fixes, we leave a massive hole for those whose lives remain broken. I want to believe the lyrics. But I need to know if this God of the impossible is still standing there when the impossible becomes my permanent reality. If the only answer we have is to sing louder, we’re missing the grace that meets us in the middle of the defeat. Faith that can’t survive a funeral isn't really faith—it’s just a mood.
