Meaning & Inspiration
“When You Say a Thing” by Mercy Chinwo is a Nigerian worship song praising God whose word comes to pass. It begins with a chant that uses “Ekueme,” an Igbo name for God meaning the one who does what He says. The chorus states it plainly: “When you say a thing, it comes to pass.”
The first verse looks back at every word spoken over the singer’s life and says she has seen it fulfilled. God is called the promise keeper and helper, and the fourth man in the fire recalls Daniel 3:25. The refrain says nobody can challenge Him or take His place.
The second verse says every tongue and tribe bow and every throne and kingdom hail His name, close to Philippians 2:10-11. The idea that His word does not fail is near Numbers 23:19 and Isaiah 55:11. The song is built on call and response and repetition.
