Lyrics
Verse 1
We're all gathered here, in Your presence Lord
With our arms open wide
With lifted hands and with open hearts
We welcome You to abide
Chorus
Oh Lord we need Your spirit
Your holy spirit, right now
Oh Lord give us Your spirit
Your holy spirit, right now
Verse 2
We can do nothing until You come dear Lord
For we are so unworthy to even call on Your name
So please please please please,
please Lord hear our prayer
And don't let our coming be in vain
Chorus
Oh Lord we need Your spirit
Your holy spirit, right now
Oh Lord give us Your spirit
Your holy spirit, right now
Vamp (x2)
Spirit, Spirit fall fresh on me
Spirit, Spirit fall fresh on me
Fall down, fall down, fall fresh on me
Fall down, fall down, fall fresh on me
Bridge
Spirit, Spirit, of the living God hallelujah
I can't make it without You I need You
So I can walk right, so I can talk right spirit
Holy spirit, fall fresh on me
Holy spirit, holy spirit
I need you to abide in me
In everything I do, in everything I say Lord
I need you in my home
And even when I'm riding down
The dangerous highways I need You I need You
Fall down, fall down
Fall fresh on me
Fall down, hallelujah, fall down
I need You Lord everyday
Spirit, spirit, I can't make it without You Lord
Spirit of the living God, fall fresh on me
I don't want my running to be in vain
I don't want my living to be in vain
I need You Lord, to lead me

Meaning & Inspiration
“Spirit Fall Down” by Luther Barnes is a prayer for the Holy Spirit to come into a gathering and into a life. The opening verse pictures a congregation with arms open wide and lifted hands, welcoming God to abide. The chorus repeats the request in plain words: “Oh Lord we need Your spirit, Your holy spirit, right now.” The second verse admits that nothing can be done until He comes and that the singers are unworthy to call on His name, asking that their coming not be in vain.
The vamp turns personal. “Spirit, Spirit fall fresh on me” is repeated, followed by pleas to walk right and talk right, and to have the Spirit abide in everyday words and actions, at home and on the road. The closing lines ask that neither running nor living be in vain.
The prayer for the Spirit to fall is close to Acts 10:44 and Acts 2:1-4, and the dependence on God recalls John 15:5, “without me ye can do nothing.” The song is a simple, repeated cry for the Spirit’s presence.
