The refrain names its subject once and returns to it from every possible angle: favor received rather than favor earned. Verse after verse rules out the usual explanations — fasting, giving, intellect, strength, position — each one set against the same repeated answer, favor undeserved. That pattern of ruling out human effort before naming grace recalls Titus 3:5's insistence that salvation comes "not because of righteous things" a person has done, but because of mercy, and Ephesians 2:8-9's description of grace as a gift rather than a wage.
The bridge turns more vivid, imagining what onlookers would think — laughter, shame — set against a private knowledge that only grace explains survival. Language of being discarded and then held recurs late in the song, naming a low point without dwelling on its details.
