Minister GUC - The Promise Lyrics

Lyrics

I bring Your word before You today

You will have way You said

Neverless, We will bow before You

We will lift up our hands

Cause in Your stead

There is healing, there is power

In Your stead, there is liberty

You have promised, You have promised

You will never let go

You will never let go

Holy spirit, holy spirit

You never let go

You never let go

Even when I cry at night and feel You don't see

You see, You don't despise at all

You don't segregate oh

The filthy ones You promised you will clean

Become body to the throne of grace

That's what You said

You have promised, You have promised

You will never let go

You will never let go

Holy spirit, holy spirit

You never let go

You never let go

Okwere mu nkwam, Okwere mu nkwa

Ogayarapumo ogayarapumo

(He promised He won't let go)

Onye mje monu (The one I boast in)

Ogada bachuruzor (The strong hold at the door)

Ogadarihe nelu mmiri (He walked upon the water)

Chimarobimo (He knows my heart)

Ike nile dinaka gi (All power is in Your hand)

Obim o (my heart)

You have promised, You have promised

You will never let go

You will never let go

Holy spirit, holy spirit

You never let go

You never let go

Meaning & Inspiration

I keep thinking about the part where the song says, "The filthy ones You promised you will clean." It hits hard because it’s not pretending we’ve got it all together. It feels like that scene in Isaiah where he realizes he’s a man of unclean lips, and instead of backing away, God touches his mouth. It feels honest to say that we’re bringing our mess to the throne of grace, like Hebrews talks about, finding mercy exactly when we’re at our worst. There’s something heavy about that, the idea that God’s promise isn’t for the perfect, but for the ones who know they need cleaning.

But then I stop and look at the repetition of "You will never let go." It’s comforting, but I have to check myself. Is it true? We’re told in John that no one can snatch us out of His hand, and that’s a rock-solid promise, but it’s easy to use that to forget the struggle. The lyrics talk about crying at night and feeling like He doesn’t see, which is real. We’ve all been there, wondering if He actually cares or if we’re just talking to the ceiling. It feels like the song is trying to hold onto the truth of His presence even when the feelings say the opposite. I’m just not sure if we’re always careful enough to remember that He promised to be with us, but He didn't necessarily promise it would feel like a smooth ride. It makes me wonder if we want a God who promises to hold on, or just a God who promises to keep us comfortable. I guess I keep coming back to that line—that He cleans the filthy ones—and wondering if I’m actually ready to be changed or if I just want Him to keep holding me while I stay the way I am.
