Meaning & Inspiration
“Eloi Eloi” by Minister GUC is an extended worship chant built on the name of God. Eloi is the Aramaic word for “my God,” the word Jesus used on the cross in Mark 15:34, and the lyric alternates it with the English “My God.” The long opening repeats the cry until it becomes a steady prayer, with a few added phrases such as “my help, my strength, my hope.”
The middle of the recording leaves room for prayer in tongues and spoken lines. The singers call God mighty in battle, say He is already present, and describe the glory of the Lord filling the place. Later lines name Him as help, peace, strength and King, and ask where else the singer could run.
The ending returns to Eloi and to short calls of praise. The cry for help is close to Psalm 18:2, Psalm 46:1 and Psalm 62:7, which call God a rock, refuge and strength. The song is a sustained devotional moment more than a story, and it is meant to be entered slowly.
