Meaning & Inspiration

Buru Hallelujah is an energetic praise song from West Africa that mixes several languages. The opening chorus repeats a call-and-response hallelujah phrase that ends with the name "Jehovah," and it returns again and again, giving the song a dance-ready rhythm.

The verse moves into English and Nigerian Pidgin. It begins with "Holy holy holy" and calls God worthy, then credits Him with the "plenty testimonies" the singer sees in life. Words such as "Imela," an Igbo word for thanks, add a note of gratitude, and the line "I never see this kind God before" expresses plain amazement. The opening threefold "Holy" resembles the cry of the seraphim in Isaiah 6, although the lyrics do not quote that passage.

The later sections use a call-and-response pattern around "Oga" and "papa," local terms for a master and a father, to present God as both authority and caring parent. The refrain "Halle Halle" closes out a song meant for shared celebration.
