Angel Benard - Nikumbushe Wema Wako Lyrics
Lyrics

Meaning & Inspiration
Angel Benard dropped this track on December 16, 2016, as the lead single for her project Nikumbushe Wema Wako, and it strikes a chord with anyone who has ever wrestled with the tension between faith and human anxiety. We are all prone to the same spiritual amnesia that plagued the Israelites after they walked through the Red Sea on dry ground. One minute they were witnessing the miraculous power of God, and the next, they were grumbling in the desert because their bellies were hungry. Angel captures this weakness perfectly when she sings about how easy it is for our mouths to be filled with complaints when life stops moving in the direction we want. It is a raw admission that even when we know God dwells within us, fear often tries to take the driver’s seat.
When you cry out, "Nikumbushe wema wako," or "Remind me of your goodness," you are essentially praying the same prayer as the Psalmist who commanded his own soul to bless the Lord and forget not all His benefits. The theology here is built on the active discipline of remembrance. In Joshua 4, God commanded the people to set up stones of remembrance so they would not lose sight of what He had done. Angel is asking for that same anchoring. She sings about being engraved on the palms of God's hands, which is a direct nod to Isaiah 49:16. She acknowledges that if the Lord had left her for even a single step, she would never have arrived where she is today. This is the doctrine of sustaining grace, the truth that every breath you draw is a gift He holds in place.
The shift in the song moves from the struggle of the wilderness to the act of worship during the trial. She isn't asking for her problems to vanish; she is asking for the eyes to see God’s historical faithfulness so she can sing a song of praise while tears are still streaming down her face. This is the posture of Job, who maintained his integrity even when he had lost everything, refusing to let his mouth sin by blaming God. By asking to be reminded of His greatness in times of trouble, she is intentionally choosing to build an altar of praise over the rubble of her circumstances. This track strips away the pretense of a problem-free life and replaces it with the iron-clad reality that our past encounters with God are the fuel we need to survive our current storm. When you realize that the same hands that pulled you out of the dust and gave you dignity are still the hands holding your future, complaining loses its power and worship becomes your only logical response.
