Meaning & Inspiration
“Cry” by Victor Ivyic is a corporate lament that keeps returning to the line “We belong to you.” The verses name tiredness and brokenness, ask heaven to hear, and say plainly, “Lord we need you.” The repeated “we cry” gives the song its title and becomes a refrain.
The middle asks questions that appear in many psalms of lament: “When will you come, Lord? When will it end, Lord?” It then asks God to hold their hands, stay with them and not let go. The names Yahweh and Jehovah are called out in the middle of the cry.
The outro lists what the cry is about: death, storms, wars and fear everywhere, and the question “Are you there?” leads into a long plea of “Hear us now.” It is close to the laments in Psalm 13:1-2 and Psalm 22:1-2, while the belonging recalls Psalm 100:3 and the plea to be held recalls Psalm 73:23. The song stays a prayer of belonging and need.
