Meaning & Inspiration

The dirt under my fingernails hasn't fully scrubbed off yet. You spend long enough in the pig pen, or just wandering the dark alleys of your own making, and you start to think that’s your permanent address. You get used to the smell of burnt-out bridges.

Then, Tasha Cobbs Leonard sings, "I'll be seated at Your feet."

That line hits me different when I’m still shaky from the walk home. It isn't a song for people who have their lives lined up like soldiers in a row. It’s for the ones who finally stopped running. When she says, "That’s where You want me, Lord," it’s not some pious suggestion. It’s a confession. It’s the realization that while I was busy trying to prove I didn't need a father, He was just waiting for me to get tired enough to sit down.

There’s a tension in the persistence of it. She sings "forever" over and over until it loses that breezy, Sunday-morning sound and starts to feel like a barricade. I know that feeling. Once you’ve been on the outside, you don't want to leave the table again. I’ve read the story in Luke 15 a thousand times, and usually, people focus on the robe or the ring or the fatted calf. But look at the brother who stayed—he had the Father, but he didn't have the awe. I think the ones who come back from the wreckage understand the "feet" part better. That’s where the perfume was poured in the Gospels. That’s where the scars are visible.

Sitting at His feet feels like an act of rebellion against my own nature. My nature is to bolt, to find the next distraction, to keep my hands busy with things that eventually turn to ash. To sit? That takes guts. It means admitting you have nothing left to offer but your presence.

I’m still carrying the smoke. My clothes probably still reek of where I’ve been. But when the music hits that repetitive, insistent rhythm, I don’t feel like I have to go change first. I just sit. I’m not sure how long I can stay, or if I’ll try to bolt again when the next wave of shame hits, but for right now, this is where I am. I’m not standing at the door hoping for a handout. I’m sitting at the feet, and for the first time in a long time, the silence doesn't feel like an accusation. It feels like a homecoming I didn't deserve.

Maybe that’s what she means by "forever." It’s not a promise that I’ll be perfect; it’s a prayer that I’ll be still. Even if I’m still shaking. Even if I’m still a mess. I’m here. That’s enough.
