Meaning & Inspiration
“Okokroko (Remix)” by Sonnie Badu is a worship song sung mostly in Twi, an Akan language of Ghana, with the title word “Okokroko” used as a name of praise for God. The opening verse addresses Him as Onyame, God, and says His works befit Him. It calls Him “Obrempon Nyame” and “Nana Nyame,” titles of greatness and honor, and speaks of lifting His name and praising Him.
The chorus repeats “Okokroko” with short lines of exaltation. The second verse is a series of questions addressed to God about who He is and what power and wisdom He has used to speak and to create, ending with a request that He say something to the singer. The repeated “Ka biribi kyerԑ’m o” works as that request: speak to me.
The closing section calls on Jesus, Yehowa, and “Me Nyame,” my God, in extended repetition. The themes of God’s greatness and wonder in His works are close to Psalm 145:3, Psalm 66:3, and Psalm 96:4. The song’s message is awe and a longing to hear God.
