“Healing Rain” by Michael W. Smith uses rain as a picture of mercy coming down on a town. The first verse says healing rain is coming nearer to rich and poor, weak and strong, and that tears of joy and shame are washed away in the name of Jesus. The chorus says it comes with fire, and that the singer is not afraid to be washed in Heaven’s rain.
The imagery is close to Hosea 6:3, which compares the Lord’s coming to rain that waters the earth, and to Joel 2:23 on rain sent from above.
The second verse calls people to the mercy seat, while the third points to the Son of man who can take a leper and let him stand. That recalls Mark 1:40-41, where Jesus heals a leper. The line about hands being held by “the great I Am” echoes Exodus 3:14. The song asks for healing and mercy to reach the lost, with the rain standing for God’s grace falling on the weary and the sick.
