Michael Whitaker Smith was born on October 7, 1957, in Kenova, West Virginia, and grew up to become an American musician who has charted in both contemporary Christian and mainstream music. After recommitting his life to Christianity in November 1979, he began his career as a songwriter and keyboardist, including touring with Amy Grant. His debut album, The Michael W. Smith Project, was released in 1983, and he soon became known for songs such as “Friends” and the crossover hit “Place in This World.”
Over the course of his career, Smith has been recognized widely for his work, receiving three Grammy Awards and more than forty Dove Awards, as well as an American Music Award. In 1999, he received the ASCAP “Golden Note” Award. His catalog of worship-focused albums includes Worship (2001), Worship Again (2002), Sovereign (2014), and Surrounded (2018), alongside other releases such as I’ll Lead You Home (1995).
Beyond recording, Smith founded Rocketown, a Nashville-based youth organization, in 1994, and has served as a spokesperson for Compassion International. He has also authored multiple books, including This Is Your Time. His contributions to gospel music were honored with his induction into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame in 2009, and he was inducted into the West Virginia Music Hall of Fame in 2018.
