Meaning & Inspiration

In Michael W. Smith’s version of “Waymaker,” the repetition is aggressive. It’s almost claustrophobic. But there is one phrase buried in the final act that haunts me: "Even when I can't feel it, You're working."

Stop and look at the syntax. It’s a confession of blindness. We usually equate God’s presence with a specific kind of internal heat—a sensation of peace, a sudden clarity, or a spike in adrenaline that we label as "the anointing." When that feeling isn't there, we tend to conclude that the machinery of heaven has ground to a halt. We start looking for the exit.

But these lyrics propose a terrifying alternative: what if your nerves are simply not calibrated to pick up the frequency of God’s labor?

In Isaiah 45:15, the prophet declares, "Truly you are a God who hides yourself." It’s a strange thing to cling to. We want a God who announces His arrival with a fanfare, not a God who hides in the drywall of our lives, structural and unseen. When I hear Smith sing these lines, the tension between the literal—the empty room, the cold prayer, the silence—and the spiritual claim—"You're working"—becomes almost unbearable. It’s not a comforting cliché; it’s a demand for endurance. It asks me to trust that the mending is happening even when the stitches are invisible.

The poetry here isn't trying to be clever. It’s functional. It’s a rhythmic hammer meant to beat the skepticism out of the listener. If you strip away the melodic safety net, you’re left with a stark, blunt assessment: my perception is a poor metric for truth.

There’s a real, messy humanity in admitting that I can’t feel a thing. Most of us spend our lives trying to curate experiences where we feel “moved.” We equate the movement of the Holy Spirit with the movement of our own emotions. But if God is a "Waymaker" in the darkness, then light is not the primary condition of His activity. He is active in the black.

I’m left wondering if the "working" mentioned here is meant to be for our benefit, or if it’s simply His nature. Does He work because we are in pain, or is He just incapable of stillness? The lyrics don't give me a clean answer. They just insist on the persistence of the Divine, regardless of whether I am paying attention. It’s a humbling thought, sitting in the middle of a song that refuses to stop until the listener concedes that their "feeling" is not the measure of reality.
