Meaning & Inspiration

“Open the Eyes of My Heart” by Michael W. Smith is a short prayer to see God clearly. The chorus asks, “Open the eyes of my heart, Lord… I want to see You,” and the request is repeated until it becomes the whole song. It asks for sight, not for a gift or a change in circumstances.

The verse describes what the singer hopes to see: the Lord “high and lifted up, shinin’ in the light of Your glory,” with power and love poured out. It then joins the congregation’s voice, “as we sing holy, holy, holy.” The long closing section drops everything else and repeats “holy” followed by “I want to see you.”

The prayer is close to Ephesians 1:18, which speaks of the eyes of the heart being enlightened, and the vision of the Lord high and lifted up recalls Isaiah 6:1-3, where the seraphim cry holy. Psalm 27:4 also describes longing to gaze on the beauty of the Lord. The song is quiet, repetitive and devotional.
