The mud on my boots hasn't fully dried yet. It’s been a long walk back from places I shouldn’t have been, and frankly, I’m still surprised the gate wasn’t locked. When I hear Mercy Chinwo singing "Agu-nechemba one"—the Lion that guards the nation—I don't hear some clean, Sunday-morning theological lecture. I hear the sound of someone who knows what it means to be hunted down by Grace.
There’s this line she keeps circling back to: "Now dem dey call me for WhatsApp e eh, dey ask me what’s up e eh. I tell dem no be by power e eh, na by Your grace o."
It’s messy, isn't it? It’s not a choir robe aesthetic. It’s real life interrupting. People start noticing when you’ve been pulled out of the fire. They see the change, they want the formula, they want to know "what's up." And you’re just standing there, smelling like the pigpen, realizing that your whole life has turned around not because you got your act together, but because the "I Am" showed up in the middle of your mess.
It reminds me of Exodus 3:14, where God just says, "I AM WHO I AM." It’s terrifying, really. You can’t put that in a box. You can’t negotiate with it. You just have to submit to it. When I was out there running, I thought I was defining myself. I thought I was building my own life. But the truth is, I was just drifting. Then you encounter the one who is the "Odogwu-akataka"—the mighty warrior—and suddenly, your identity isn't based on your failures or your frantic attempts to be "good." It’s based on who He is.
I don’t know if I’ll ever stop feeling like the guy who barely made it through the door. Some days the shame creeps back in, telling me I’m still the person who left.
