Lyrics

Have Thine own way, Lord! Have Thine own way!
Thou art the potter, I am the clay.
Mold me and make me after Thy will,
While I am waiting, yielded and still.

Have Thine own way, Lord! Have Thine own way!
Search me and try me, Master today!
Whiter than snow Lord, wash me just now,
As in Thy presence humbly I bow.

Have Thine own way, Lord! Have Thine own way!
Wounded and weary, help me I pray!
Power, all power, surely is Thine!
Touch me and heal me, Savior divine!

Have Thine own way, Lord! Have Thine own way!
Hold o'er my being absolute sway.
Fill with Thy Spirit till all shall see
Christ only, always, living in me!
Fill with Thy Spirit till all shall see
Christ only, always, living in me!

Meaning & Inspiration

“Have Thine Own Way, Lord” is a prayer of surrender shaped by the image of God as potter and the worshiper as clay. Each verse yields another part of life to divine authority: the will, the conscience, physical weakness, and the whole person. Waiting quietly before the potter suggests patient submission rather than self-directed change, while the request to be searched and cleansed brings confession into the prayer.

The hymn also joins dependence with hope. Weariness and wounds are brought to the Savior whose power can heal, and the final verse asks for the Spirit to fill the believer so completely that Christ becomes visible in daily life. Its repeated opening keeps every request under the same governing desire—that the Lord’s way, not personal preference, would prevail. The result is a concise expression of humility, renewal, and consecration, moving from being molded by God to displaying the life of Christ.
