Meaning & Inspiration

“Msalabani pa Mwokozi” by Daudi Petro is the Swahili hymn Tenzi za Rohoni number 77, and the title means “At the Savior’s cross.” Each verse ends with the same title for Jesus, “Mwana wa Mungu,” the Son of God, and the chorus repeats that He saved the singer.

The first verse says that it was at the cross that the singer asked for healing and was saved. The second names the tree as the place where the singer asked for holiness and was redeemed by blood. The third describes being saved from sin that dwelt within, because He died on the tree. The fourth speaks of the precious blood of Jesus, which saves from wrongdoing and leads the singer in salvation.

The last verse invites the listener to plunge into that costly stream and find life there. The imagery is close to 1 Peter 2:24, Ephesians 1:7 and 1 John 1:7, which connect the cross, the blood, and forgiveness. The hymn is a simple testimony about what Christ did at the cross.
