Meaning & Inspiration
“Abba” by Leon Timbo and Northern Lights United is a worship song about the nearness of the Father. The first verse says God is more real than the ground under the singer’s feet and the wind in the lungs, and adds that His thoughts define the singer. The chorus then states, “Abba, I belong to You.”
The second verse uses the image of the prodigal son: “You came running down my prodigal road, you came running with a ring and a robe.” It describes grace as a collision on the way home, with the arms of a Father who will not let go. The song is built on repetition so that the belonging is the last thing the listener hears.
The themes are close to Romans 8:15, Luke 15:20-24 and Acts 17:28, on crying “Abba, Father,” the father who runs to his returning son and living in God.
