Meaning & Inspiration

"Hosanna" centers on a compact confession of divine holiness. Its opening joins the threefold "holy" with an acknowledgment of the Lord as God of power and might, while heaven and earth are pictured as filled with divine glory. The language places worship before explanation: God is praised for who he is, and the repeated acclamation gives the song a congregational, prayerful character.

The words closely echo the worship of heavenly beings in Isaiah 6:3 and Revelation 4:8, where holiness is proclaimed without end. The cry of "Hosanna in the highest" also recalls the praise surrounding the arrival of Jesus in Matthew 21:9. Within the song, that cry works as both adoration and an appeal to the saving King. The few lines therefore hold together awe, glory, and hope, inviting a sustained focus on the majesty of God rather than on the circumstances of the singer.
