About Josh Garrels
Josh Garrels is a singer-songwriter, producer, and composer whose music weaves together folk, hip-hop, and orchestral sounds, all while exploring the Christian faith he embraced in his early twenties. Born Joshua Michael Garrels on September 25, 1980, in South Bend, Indiana, he began his career in the early 2000s and has since built a reputation for a genre-blending style that defies easy labels. In 2005, he co-founded the independent label Small Voice Records, and he has historically chosen to self-record, produce, and distribute his music, keeping creative control close to home.
Garrels released his first album, Stonetree, in 2002, followed by Over Oceans (2006) and Jacaranda (2008). His 2011 album, Love & War & the Sea in Between, marked a significant milestone. It reached No. 19 on the Billboard Digital Albums chart and No. 83 on the Billboard 200, and was named Album of the Year by Christianity Today. The project also inspired a 2013 music documentary, The Sea in Between, filmed on Mayne Island, British Columbia, in which Garrels starred.
Continuing his independent path, Garrels released Home in 2015, which also charted at No. 83 on the Billboard 200. His later albums include The Light Came Down (2016), Chrysaline (2019), and Peace to All Who Enter Here (2020). Throughout his catalog, Garrels has maintained a focus on faith and spirituality, earning a dedicated audience within the Christian music community while keeping his work firmly under his own direction.
