Lyrics

The oceans may rise over my head
It can’t change what You said
It can’t change what You said
Though I may be found in the valley of death
It can’t change what You said
It can’t change what You said .

You are good
And everything You do is good
You are kind
And everything You do is kind
You don’t fail
You haven’t and You never will
You are good
And everything You do is good .

No future or past
No height and no depth
Can change what You said
It can’t change what You said
My heart is convinced
So I’ll praise You instead
And declare what You said
I’ll declare what You said .

Your promises are yes and amen, I know
Nothing can ever change what You said, I know

Meaning & Inspiration

What You Said sets changing circumstances against the unchanging reliability of God. Rising oceans and the valley of death represent danger at opposite extremes, yet neither is allowed to overturn the divine word. The response is not denial but confession: God remains good, kind, and faithful within conditions that might suggest otherwise. Repeating those attributes makes character the basis for confidence.

The second half broadens the claim across time and space. Neither past nor future, height nor depth, can alter what God has spoken, language that recalls the assurance of Romans 8 that nothing can separate believers from divine love. The refrain about promises being yes and amen directly echoes Second Corinthians. Praise consequently becomes an answer to fear and uncertainty. The heart is described as convinced, so declaration replaces surrender to the threatening scene. By returning to what God has said, the song presents worship as steady agreement with his promises when visible evidence remains unsettled.
